Hot on the heels of yesterday’s product announcements, Samsung is unveiling yet another mini-laptop today. The Samsung N120’s claim to fame is that it will have a 10.1 inch display – but the same full sized keyboard found on its 12 inch laptops.
In other words, get ready to see a Samsung laptop with a huge bezel around the screen area. Just what you’ve been waiting for, right?
Samsung also claims that users will be able to get about 10.5 hours of battery life out of the N120’s 6 cell battery.
The notebook will have an Intel Atom processor, a 3-in-1 memory card reader, 3 USB ports, 1.3MP camera, and Bluetooth. No word on what flavor of Atom CPU it’ll sport, or which WiFi standards it’ll adhere to. I think 802.11b/g is a given, but I wouldn’t place any bets on 802.11draft-n. The Samsung N120 will weigh 2.8 pounds.
Update: NetbookNews.de tracked down some photos of the new netbook. And as expected, it’s got a big ugly bezel around the screen.
First the MSI ECO netbook and now this. We could well be seeing the start of a new category, 10+ hrs battery life.
I at least hope so. If you want to use the machine without having to charge every time you see a plug nearby, this is the minimum decent battery life for real use. I think that people who depend on their netbooks will flock to these machines, if not at once maybe on the second iteration.
Hey….this thing has better speakers! Did anyone notice that they bezel has speakers. That means this machine might put out a lot more sound. A machine for road warriors who have to put up demos at demonstrations and such.
I think people around here stepped on this things toes too early. It not a netbooks, but do we have to be so gawd-aweful closed minded about other parts of the marketplace here?
Here is the thing. for some people, the thought of a keyboard being too small is a barrier. They DON’T need a fancy CPU or tons of features, they just needs something affordable that they can type on.
Is this a netbook? Nope. You are all right this is not a netbook. But it does have a big keyboard, it does have the longest battery life you will ever find, and I hate to say it still has most of the aesthetics of the NC10 which is a wonderful looking machine.
If this thing is priced right for N. America it might be just what some people need. I have always been a proponent of the WHOLE computer market shifting down. Smaller machines, less bells and whistles, better energy use, and lower prices. We should applaud Samsung for not putting out another $1,400 laptop in a world where that is not what people want or need.
Again is this a netbook? Nope. But is this a nice idea for a lightweight, energy sipping, notebook that people can afford? Yes, it is…hell yes it is for sure. Can they do better…yeah they can but maybe we will see that in another year. I’d look forward to the N122 that has an 11” screen, a better Atom processor, and even more refined aesthetics.
You know, I’ve been itching to replace my veteran Pentium 3 Toshiba clunker with something exactly the same size… I hate the over-use of the word “FAIL”, but it’s never been so apt.
Samsung’s first netbook, the NC10 was their best so far. It is amazing that several netbook manufacturers actually produce a less desirable machine on their second (or third) attempt. Glad I bought my NC10 when I did.
This is why I said that not the screensize, but the fact that the keyboard is sub-100% is one of the boundaries of the kingdom of NetBook.
