Samsung announces N110 netbook, Laptop Mag reviews it

03/23/2009 at 8:12 AM by Brad Linder 8 Comments

n110-laptopSamsung has unveiled its successor to the popular NC10 netbook. The Samsung N110 is superficially a lot like the NC10, but it has a few modifications that should make it attractive. Laptop Magazine has a full review of the new computer, which was officially unveiled last night, but here are a few of the highlights:

  • The chassis has been redesigned with rounder edges and a glossy lid.
  • The touchpad is a little wider and longer than the one on the NC10.
  • Samsung has upgraded the battery with a higher capacity 5900mAh 6 cell unit (the original NC10 came with a 5200mAh) battery. Laptop Mag reports that the battery’s good for 7 hours and 24 minutes, or about 50 minutes longer than the Nc10 battery.

Overall, the Samsung N110 is a minor upgrade though. The laptop has the same 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU as its predecessor. It also has 1GB of RAM, a 160Gb hard drive and runs Windows XP Home Edition, just like the NC10. It does cost a bit more, with a price tag of around $469. As Portable Monkey discovered this weekend, you can pick up an original Samsung NC10 for under $400 from CostCo.

Two things I notice; first, the front edge being rounded means you can see the indicator lights more easily while using it because they have been put on the curve; second the chrome sides have been reduced or made less ‘chromed’.

Sadly, I think they could have done more with the touchpad made it a few more millimeters bigger, and if they looked around here they would have picked up that the pad needs a lip or ridge around it. I wish they would; have said something about the speakers. (I know this is my pet peeve and its appears like maybe later model NC10s had better speakers then my unit has, but all the same better audio on a netbook could be used as a selling point.

Nooooo! it went from matte in the NC10 to *glossy* in the N110!
Why oh why do manufacturers think we want glossy? Is glossy cheaper to make?

btw. could you add a glossy/matte column to the product database? Oh and resolution, while you’re at it. ktnxbye

I agree 100%. Glossy looks great for about 1/10th of a second. Then you touch it. I liked the black NC10 because it had such a professional look to it. Glossing things up only makes it worse.
