dell-adamoDell launched its new ultrathin Adamo notebook today. The laptop is aimed squarely at the folks who thought the MacBook Air was a good idea. It measures about 13″ x 9.5″ x .65″ which makes it one of the thinnest laptops around. But it weighs 4 pounds and has a 13.4 inch 720p display, which makes it a bit big for a netbook. The computer also ships with a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2Gb of RAM, Intel GMX4500 graphics, a 128GB solid state disk, 802.11bg/n, Bluetooth, 2 USB ports, and a USB?eSATA drive.

But the main reason this thing ain’t a netbook? It has a $1999 price tag.

It looks like Dell may have another Adamo in the works though. Engadget reports that when you scan through Dell’s support documents you can find the name “Adamo 9.” Since the model with a 13.4 inch display is called the Dell Adamo 13, it seems reasonable to guess that the Adamo 9 will have a 9 inch screen. Whether it will have a price below $1000 remains to be seen.

  1. Compare the specs and price on this with a MacBook air:

    Dell

    $1999 – 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Centrino technology, Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-Bit, 2GB 800MHz DDR3 dual-channel memory3, 128GB solid state drive

    $2699 – 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Centrino technology, Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-Bit, 4GB 800MHz DDR3 dual-channel memory3, 128GB solid state drive, Mobile Broadband

    Apple

    $1799 – 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 1066MHz frontside bus, OS X 10.5.6, 2GB Memory, 120GB SATA hard drive

    $2499 – 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 1066MHz frontside bus, OS X 10.5.6, 2GB Memory, 128GB solid-state drive

I personally think the Dell looks much nicer. But Dell is competing as sleek and chic and can’t beat the prices on Apple’s entries in this category when the Apple hardware specs are arguably better than Dells? I’d say Dell has a price point problem.

  2. I always buy dell laptops, since they are one of the few reasonably priced laptops with dedicated graphics cards (some models) . This one looks like a great travel laptop, but the price is a little steep for a dell. I guess we need to see how it all fits together.

  3. chromedome: The $2000 Adamo is a Core 2 Duo. The Atom Adamo would presumably be < $1000 (I'd be willing to pay no more than $800, but would love to have one since I've been very impressed with the Mini 9 so far)

  4. Who would like to spend 2000$ for Atom processor??? I have been using Aspire One for a few month and I’m very satisfied with its performance. But that is just 400$ or even less these days.
