Want to turn your HP Mini 1000 netbook into an HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition computer? HP has just uploaded the Mi Edition installers to its support page.

Here’s what the installer does. It downloads HP’s custom version of Ubuntu Linux designed for the HP Mini 1000 and creates a bootable flash disk on your 2GB or larger USB flash drive. You can either use this utility to restore a Mi Edition netbook to its factory default condition or to install the software on a netbook that came with Windows XP.

Keep in mind, there is currently no way to create a dual boot system. In other words, you will lose all of the data on your computer and erase any existing operating systems if you run this installer. HP does include a Windows XP restore CD with the Windows version HP Mini 1000, so you can always go back if you don’t like the Mi Edition software.

The installers may work with non-HP netbooks, but the software has only been tested on the HP Mini 1000. You can download installation disk utilities that can be run from Windows or Linux.

  1. “Keep in mind, there is currently no way to create a dual boot system”

    WRONG!!!!

It is possible to have a dual boot system on your HP Mini using the original XP installation as the first OS on the first partition and Mini Mi on a separate partition with a 1 gig swap. Here is how you do it:

1st – download the Mini Mi Linux image.

2nd – remove the XP hard drive from the HP Mini.

3rd – Insert another Hard disk into the HP Mini to install the Mini Mi Linux distro on a partitioned 10 gig partition, as mention in the article.

4th – Partition the XP HardDisk with Gparted in a live distro like Knoppix. Shrink XP Partition and leave 10 gigs for Linux and 1 gig for swap. (this can be done on a desktop system (attached by USB, or on the HP Mini using external cdrom drive to run the live distro)

5th – Clone (copy/Paste) the Freshly installed Linux partition to the 10 gig partition on the XP HardDrive within Gparted. Both Drives must obviously be plugged in via USB for this and unmounted during the clone.

6th Use Super GRUB Disk or Debian Rescue to install GRUB to the MBR. Grub will recognize the OS’s installed and create entries for them in the Grub Menu. The OS’s should boot from the GRUB menu, if not the GRUB boot entries may need to be edited more precisely. The Windows Entry is simple: boot chainloader +1
Linux’s partition may need to find the image in /boot/image-2.6.27-i386 to boot or whatever it is on your machine.

Thats how you get the best of both worlds on the HP Mini.

This method has been tried by myself on several different systems where installations dont offer you options to install on a specific partitions, and just wipe the HD clean to do a fresh install.

    1. can you install xp on a mini mi and completely take mini mi off

How would you load xp onto the mini do you need the external optical drive or can you do it through usb as well

do you have a link to a guide on how to do this?

  2. I bought the HP Mini 1124NR with MI…what I want to know is, if I realize that I don’t like MI, can I change the OS to XP or something else? What about drivers etc?

  3. Installed this on the Compaq Mini, runningWindows XP, which is the same machine as the HP, and the only thing we have available here in the UK. I downloaded the tools from the HP site, onto a Samsung NC10 running XP, and it worked like a dream . Just to let you guys know, yes, the 1st part of the procedure makes the flash drive bootable. When you restart the Mini, select the Boot Sequence menu, boot from USB, and yes, it installs in about 15 minutes. It works on the Compaq, without fault.

  4. Network (wired or wireless) don’t go in Acer Aspire One 110. Special function keys, webcams and all the other things running!

  5. Will this setup my USB as a bootable – and, I can run MI off that usb all the time?

Or, won’t that work? I don’t have a hdd in my hp mini – I removed it when the thing died after 1 month. I had too many passwords on it – could NOT risk sending it to Thai hardware support and having someone end up with my 100+ passwords to all accounts.

Now – I’ve got just usb option. Will this work for me? Any suggestions?

    Thanks.
