dell-mini-10

Dell has announced that the Inspiron Mini 10 will be available for preorder starting today. But not from Dell’s web site. You’ll have to wait until 26th to configure and order the mini-laptop from Dell. No, starting today, customers in the US will be able to place an order through home shopping channel QVC‘s web site.

Dell announced its partnership with QVC in a blog post today. The netbook will have a base price of $399 fora model with an Intel Atom processor, a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 576 pixel display, and a 160GB hard drive. All models will also come with a 1.3MP camera, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, a 3 cell, 24Whr battery and an HDMI out port.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 ships with 1GB of RAM, which is not upgradeable. Two different versions of the Intel Atom processor will be available, the Z520 and the Z530.

At launch Dell will only have Windows XP versions available, but the company will offer Ubuntu 8.04 Linux as an option in the future. Dell will also eventually offer a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel screen capable of displaying 720p HD video. Digital TV tuner, Bluetooth, and integrated GPS options will also be available down the road.

Dell has also uploaded a bunch of high quality pictures of the upcoming netbook to its official Flickr page.

  1. I was just listening the the Linux Outlaws podcast and apparently, Dell has dropped Ubuntu as an option on most if not all of their computers in the UK.

Just my opinion, but when covering a story about a new computer that is offered with Linux as at least on option, you should follow up and ask *where* that Linux option is offered.

    1. OR you could go ahead and read the announcement from Dell which states “If you prefer Linux, Ubuntu 8.04 will be an available option soon”

      1. Try to buy a 1330 from the Dell UK website.

Where would the internet be without jerks.

  2. I had expected to buy this netbook when it came out, but the inability to upgrade the memory rules it out. I’ve laboured before with computer with low to modest memory and have vowed “never again”. My must criteria for a netbook include a small size which this Dell unit would just have met and the ability to upgrade the thing (which of course includes memory and disc to solid state).

The last thing I want to get is something which has a satisfaction lifetime of 6 months.

    1. If it’s like previous QVC “deals”, you’re paying for a load of cr*pware.

  3. Wait, what? RAM not upgradable? How is that even possible? Is it soldered to the motherboard?

  4. This hotttttt. Well only my 1000h is ugly.

The specs are pretty solid other than the 3cell battery.

  5. The Direct2Dell blog states: “…a 16:9 edge-to-edge display that supports a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768. The default screen resolution is 1024 x 576, which is a better fit for the widescreen display”

    Brad’s got it right.

    1. What does that mean? What happens to the 768-576=192 rows of pixels? Does it scale 576 pixels up to 768? LCD screens usually look awful when not running at their native resolution, Can the screen resolution be changed to 768 rows?

    1. Yeah, I was just about to point that out. I believe it should be 1280×720 pixels.

Can someone please confirm that I am correct?

      Thanks,
      -Marcus
