Asus Eee PC 1000HE with new battery, keyboard available for preorder

02/02/2009 at 9:14 AM by Brad Linder 15 Comments

asus-eee-pc-1000heAsus has created a landing page for the upcoming Eee PC 1000HE netbook. As I discovered at CES, there are a few things that distinguish this laptop from the original Eee PC 1000H. First, it has the new “chiclet” style keyboard with the shift key on the right side of the keyboard to the left of the up arrow, which should make many touch typists happy. Second, the computer has the new Intel Atom N280 CPU and GN50 GN40 chipset, which should provide better graphics performance and a tiny bit of a speed boost.

Finally, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE has a higher capacity battery. Asus claims that users should be able to get as much as 9.5 hours of battery life from the 6 cell battery. But that’s with the WiFi turned off. I’m guessing that means around 7 or 8 hours under normal usage conditions, but that still ain’t bad. It’s also worth noting that when I saw this netbook at CES, Asus claimed it would have an Intel Atom N270 CPU and get 8.7 hours of battery life. So apparently the N280 provides some power savings even though it runs at speeds of up to 1.66GHz instead of 1.6GHz.

Asus says the netbook has a suggested retail price of $399.99 and that it will be available for pre-order at a number of online retailers for $25 off. Unfortunately when you actually search those retailers (like Amazon, Newegg, Buy.com, or J&R), there don’t appear to be any listings for this netbook. Yet.

You can read more about the Eee PC 1000HE in the Liliputing Product Database.

Update: You can now pre-order the Eee PC 1000HE
from Amazon for $374.

Yes my understanding is that the power savings doesn’t come so much from the N280 chip but the further integration of the new setup gives a reduced TDP for the CPU + Chipset package.

Glad to see a model with improvements to existing features instead of just adding more features.

It’s great to see the price points dropping across the board to under $400 with the new models announced, including the Aspire 10inch which J&R listed at $350. Also excited to read that the battery on this model is supposed to be flush with the chassis, unlike the bulky 1000H/A. Although I don’t see how that’s possible given the increase in capacity… Brad, can you confirm from seeing it at CES?

I guess that Asus announcement jumped the gun a little since none of the retailers had this model listed (even for pre-order) when the release came out. That has now changed. I finally see it coming up on amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/10-Inch-Netbook-Processor-Bluetooth-Battery/dp/B001QTXL82/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233606159&sr=8-3

Haven’t checked the others yet but Amazon is listing it for $374.00 in either blue or black.

Note that at that price you are already getting the Asus-offered $25 discount WITHOUT joining the Facebook group.

Sounds very tempting. I just wish I could test out that chicklet keyboard first.

Yup. That’s what I meant. Don’t blog and drive kids… not that I did… I’m just saying, it’s a bad idea.
