HP may have begun selling the HP Mini 2140 netbook on its website last week. But just in the last day or two did the company begin allowing customers to configure the laptop to their liking. You can still find a number of pre-configured models with prices ranging from $499 to $799, but if you want a model with SUSE Linux, 2GB of RAM, and an 80GB SSD, you can order one now.
Some of the pricing options are a bit comical. You can save a buck by removing the OS Label if you order Windows XP Home or Linux. And that 80GB SSD will set you back $575. On the bright side, if you want a 6 cell battery rather than a 3 cell battery you’ll only need to add $25 to the price.
Unfortunately there’s still no option to purchase the netbook with a 1366 x 768 pixel display. The only screen resolution available at the moment is 1024 x 576, but the higher resolution screens should be available in another month or two.
thanks _mantis_!
Has anybody else noticed that doing a custom configuration seems to cost at least $100 more than the same pre-built config? What’s going on here? I hope they fix this before the hi-res version becomes available.
I ordered a 2140 with 6 cell battery the first day they were available and it was supposed to ship yesterday. Bot an email informing me of a delay.
Called HP and was told all 2140 shipments were delayed due to the Chinese New Year. Units are due in to HP warehouse Feb 13 and outshipments will be a day or so after.
And all this with a shipping date of sometime in February.
Greed will be their undoing.
Configuration options are nice, but I think price is one of the MAJOR points for a netbook, and anything very far beyond $400 is kind of ridiculous. They’re really missing the point.
I’d pay a premium for the screen resolution (yes I know, it will hurt my eyes – the goggles, they do nothing!) but having to cope with only 600 vertical pixels is getting tiresome.
$799 for a netbook??? Only if it were solid gold.
