hp-6-cell-2

The HP Mini 1000 netbook currently comes with a 3-cell battery which sits flush with the unit. While many netbook batteries take up some space in the rear or bottom of the computer, the HP battery seems to take up nearly no space at all, which helps contribute to the super-thin shape of the HP Mini 1000, which measures just about an inch thick.

HP has said it plans to release an optional 6-cell battery which would take up more space while providing additional battery life, but up until today I hadn’t actually seen the battery. And then I happened across Xavier Lanier from Notebooks.com, who just happened have one on him. It seems to fit on the device rather awkwardly considering what a sleek looking netbook the HP Mini 1000 normally is. And it adds a bit of heft to the netbook, which weighs just 2.25 pounds with a 3 cell battery. In fact, I pulled out my 3.2 pound Eee PC 1000H to compare the two, and they seemed to be about the same weight. But we didn’t have a scale handy, so don’t quote me on that.

There’s no official word on when the 6 cell batteries will be available or how much they’ll cost. The HP Mini 1000 does get close to 3 hours of life from a standard 3 cell battery, so I could see many users deciding they don’t need the high capacity battery. But if you care more about extending your computer ttime than the appearance of your netbook, it looks like HP could have something ready soon.

  1. got to see this at my local Microcenter and it is one of the if not the best looking netbooks I have ever seen, very nice design in my opinion. Damn shame they axed the Expresscard slot from the 2133 model and 1280×768 resolution. Too bad it also uses a 1.8″ HDD or tiny SSD.

Damn it HP, you had to intentionally cripple some parts of this netbook to not have it rise above the rest!!!
