carputer2 It’s been a few months since I’ve seen a good hack for cramming an Eee PC into an automobile dashboard. Fortunately, another Russian hacker who has what I can only assume are some mad skills and way too much time on his hands, has posted an article showing exactly how to take a 7 inch Eee PC apart and turn it into a carputer that hooks into an auto stereo system and even acts as a graphic equalizer.

The finished product is an auto computer with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built in storage plus an 8GB SDHC card, a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, Bluetooth, a slot-loading DVD-RW drive, GPS, 5.1 channel audio, a touschreen, and a boatload of USB adapters that string the whole thing together. All in all, I dare say this guy’s car probably has more features than the average desktop PC. Plus, you know, you can drive it places.

  1. damn ! that hack is way to cool man !
just waiting here for my touchscreen to arrive..
but this would be a nice mod for my car… meaby add a small wireless keyboard with touchpad… and there you would have a perfect carputer.. music + video + really awesome wardriving kit 😀

  2. Nice to see people take on projects like this and do it right. I wish I had that kind of time so I could see what kind of project I could accomplish. Don’t think I could out do this one though.

  3. My hat is off to the guy.

About 16 – 17 years ago, when I was a teenager, I took apart and hooked up a tape recorder inside the dash of my pickup with appropriate switches to be able to record songs off the radio when I liked them.
I had a switch and 4 buttons on the dash, and the opening for the cassette.

It actually looked pretty good, but of course that was a teenagers opinion.

That is how we got songs in the old days before Napster.

  4. LOL, holy crap, you got it right… mad skills indeed. It would be my luck some jerkwad would pry it out of my dash the day after I finished the install.
