cesA week from now I’ll be in Las Vegas attending the international CES trade show. In recent years some of the hottest trends have been in home entertainment technology, with companies fighting to see who could showcase the HDTV with the largest screen. But this year there’s no doubt that one of the biggest trends will be small – like netbook small. Computers with 10.2 inch and smaller displays are hot these days, but I don’t have to tell you that.

So here’s my question to you. What are your predictions for CES? Do you expect to see companies launch netbooks with tablet-style swiveling touchscreenns? WiMax? 3D netbooks with dedicated graphics and foldout 150% sized keyboards?

Share your predictions in the comments — and let me know what you think I should be on the lookout for. Is there one company you’ve really been expecting to enter the netbook space that has yet to do so (not counting Apple). Maybe I’ll stop by their booth and try to put them on the hot seat.

  1. A Dell Mini 10.

    A Sony netbook.

    A 10″ Acer Aspire One.

    More netbooks with trackpoint nipples.

More netbooks with multitouch, in fact more laptops with multitouch trackpads.

    Netbooks with OLED displays.

Netbooks with AMD processors. Or VIA NANO.

Plans for future netbooks with next gen Atom processors.

Faster and lower power SSDs in all form factors–ZIF 1.8″ drives, 2.5″ SATA, etc.

A move from PATA to SATA for netbook drive interfaces.

Faster 1.8″ hard drives, like at least 5,400rpm.

Thinner netbooks in general, like 1″ thick should be MAX.

More color, more designs on lids, more materials.

A netbook with something other than a lithium ion battery, like lithium polymer or whatever.

    More netbooks with ExpressCard slots.

More netbooks with mini-display port rather than VGA.

Plans for somebody to build a netbook with the nVidia chipset and an Atom. At a decent price point, i.e. not much more than today.

Plans for netbooks to ship with Windows 7. And more reasons why Windows 7 will kick butt on netbooks (how about better optimization for SSDs, or better power management or …)

    A nice Atom based 10-11-12″ kitchen all-in-one touchscreen PC…

  2. A glimpse of the new eee phone would be terriffic. I sense a new wanabee-gadget here *want*

  3. Brad, very interested in Sony’s Vaio P, if real. Your website is great. BR

  4. Convertible tablet touchscreen netbook would be good, but I’d love to see someone run with the idea of dual (multi) touchscreens, where one (or both) can be switched to on-screen keyboard.
Probably won’t happen though, as usually a manufacturer like Asus plods along incorporating one idea at a time and everybody else copies. It’d take someone like Apple to make a leap and introduce a revolutionary device.

  5. Look around for any devices (netbooks, Mids, cell phones) that are going to be using Pixel Qi screens in them (per the Pixel Qi site, these screens use very little battery and some devices will be seeing a “FIVE FOLD” increase in battery times. Also looking for netbooks with the same 2000 charge environment friendly battery as the XO-1 has per the videos at Big Think that are listed on their web site in the Press section.

Also – need this screen compatible with Linux (from OLPC XO former CTO so most likely will have drivers for Red Hat, but really want Ubuntu Drivers for any new screens).

  6. It would be interesting to know what netbook vendors know about the future availability of Windows XP for netbook applications. Also whether the various Linux configurations on different manufacturers machines might begin converging on a defacto standard.

  7. New Market Technologies.
Would be nice to know what they are planning to do
with their 75% stake in the Everex name.
