samsung-nc20Just a few days after we heard that Samsung is readying its next generation of netbooks, Notebook Italia is reporting that the company plans to release a notebook with a 12.1 inch screen as soon as February. The 12 inch screen sorts of puts this notebook in a different class than the Samsung NC10, MSI Wind U100, or dozens of other netbooks with 10.2 inch or smaller displays. But there are a few things that should make the new notebook interesting for liliputer enthusiasts:

  • It will be called the Samsung NC20, which indicates that Samsung thinks this small, light weight machine is related to the NC10.
  • The Samsung NC20 will be one of the first consumer oriented notebooks to use a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U225 CPU.

Early reports indicated that the VIA Nano offered better performance in many areas than the now-ubiquitous Intel Atom CPU. But the Nano processor is a bit more of an energy hog, which could affect battery life. Still, Samsung has demonstrated that it knows how to design computers that get excellent battery life, so I wouldn’t expect the NC20’s processor to affect the battery performance too much.

if the rumors are true, the Samsung NC20 will have a 160GB hard drive, 1G of RAM, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, and a 1.3MP camera. It will weigh 1.5kg or about 3.3 pounds and cost 450 Euros or about $635 US, although computer makers have a tendency to drop prices a bit before releasing machines in the US so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the N20 drop below $600 or maybe even below $500.

  1. Hey, actually that picture is of a Samsung X360, a $2300 13.3″ ultraslim laptop.

    While I really hope that that’s what the NC20 looks like, let’s not get our hopes up right now. 😀

  2. Well at four ounces (1/4 lb) heavier then the NC10 with a 12″ screen that might seem more attractive to people, but the Via Nano doesn’t sound like much of an imporvement really. Yet, for $640 that doesn’t sound like much of a deal, unless there is a far better GPU hidden in there.

    I think samsung see it has a toe hold with NC10 so they want to expand their list fo products in ‘the west’ while the iron is hot. Good for them…but I think they need to drop the price

    If the Nano chip provides an increase in power over the Atom at the price of a bit more battery weight, it may be a good way for systems like this to fill in the enormous gap between Netbooks and other affordable computers. The fact that the Inspiron Mini 12 is actually *less* powerful than most netbooks is kind of a tough sell.

    Any word on the screen resolution?

  5. You may want to change the title to say NC20 instead of NC10. Looking forward to hearing a little more about this machine. I personally think the 12″ screen-size mark is where the cross over with regular notebooks happens (mostly because I just upgraded from a 7 year old 12″ iBook, which was definitely a notebook).
