You know how NVIDIA recently announced plans for a platform that would combine the Intel Atom low power CPU with an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU to provide enhanced video performance on netbooks and low power notebooks? Yeah, apparently they forgot to run that whole thing by Intel before unveiling the plan publicly.

DigiTimes reports that Intel currently bundles the Intel Atom CPU with the Intel 945GSE and 945GC chipset. The company apparently has no plans to work with NVIDIA to validate the NVIDIA chipset on Atom computers. And Intel also plans to continue selling the chips bundled with the chipset, which would make NVIDIA’s planned ION platform both more expensive and more difficult to assemble.

Update: Intel denies the DigiTimes report, and says it’s plenty happy to sell the Atom chip as a standalone CPU.

  1. uhhhh….If ya dont mind me asking, Doesnt Intel Own NVIDIA and AMD own ATI?

    1. Well, AMD owns ATI, but Intel doesn’t own NVidia, so … 🙂
Actually Intel are trying to create its own strong graphical chip that may outperform AMD-ATI and NVidia Graphical chips – Not likely to happen soon!
If AMD-ATI create platform that is good for netbooks I will go for it.
Unfortunately I think AMD are not that strong on processors with low power consumption as Intel.

    2. No, AMD does own ATI, but Intel does not own nVidia. In fact, there is a pretty big feud between the two these days over the future of the GPU, and especially over GPGPU markets. Google “Larrabee”, and you’ll get a hint.

  2. Well Intel always sucked … and actually never took care of what customers need anyway, so I think this is normal …
Wait 5-10 years for Intel Graphics that can actually do something, if you want.
I hope AMD or VIA pull out some ACE out the sleeve, so this bullshit is over.

  3. Remember how I said, “Circles within circles…”

Well, now I see what Nvidia was doing. They knew that Intel was not on board which is why they ANNOUNCED what people wanted …..Atom with beefier graphical power at a great price. But, Nvidia already has their own Tegra chipset that they showed off this summer to compete with Intel.

So Nvidia put on a little “theater”
    1) They got to tell everyone “Hey you love Atom, but you want more graphical power, right?!?!”
    2) Oh, look at Intel they just said, “Grrrrr, those nasty Whos down in Whoville can’t have that!” (We’re just paraphrasing)
    3) Hey look everyone we at Nvidia have this Tegra thing. Oh, by the way our CPU & GPU together use less power…neat huh…makes Atom seem sort of out dated huh…Intel is weird huh.

  4. There are two ways for NVIDIA now:

    1. Team with another processors/chipsets manufacturer, but the two major ones have already a competitor (AMD has it’s ATI graphic chips and VIA has also something by them).

    2. Create a x86 processor themselves for netbooks and similar devices. The graphic chipset could even be embedded on the processor, generating a low energy and powerful system. This can be done also for high end machines. This one should be the most recommendable, but it would mean that the company should enter a market they don’t know (CPUs).

  5. If Intel would just improve their chipset (more energy efficient) and give the integrated graphics just a bit more power the market for the NVidia chips wouldn’t be there at all. If you want a gaming rig, buy a full laptop. I never really felf constrained by graphics on my netbook.
