File this under things I should have done ages ago. Following the advice of jkOnTheRun’s Kevin Tofel, I finally got around to installing Foxmarks on my primary work laptop and on my primary netbook (which, at the moment, happens to be an Asus Eee PC 1000H).
Foxmarks lets you keep your bookmarks synchronized across multiple browsers. The latest version also adds support for password synchronization.
Update:Â Mozilla now includes a feature called Firefox Sync which offers similar capabilities, and most other web browsers can synchronized your data as well. But Foxmarks (which has since been renamed Xmarks) is one of the only options for synchronizing your data not just across different computers, but also different browsers. It works with Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer.
I have been doing this for a while in FireFox (as far as bookmarks go) with Google toolbar. I do not save any passwords in any browsers, so the password feature holds no appeal for me.
Opera is definatelly worth mentioning here – not only it has this functionality built in, it also has other things usefull for netbooks; for example,properly working (usually) “fit to width” function, thorough keyboard navigation…and it’s quite snappy.
PS. btw @thomas merrit – you do know all funcionality of extensions you mentioned is available in Opera, right? ;P (well, except Cooliris (which I discovered just now and tbh don’t know what to think of the idea yet…))
I second Opera. Don’t forget the built-in awesome mouse gestures. Opera does NOT sync passwords though, which is kinda annoying.
In one day at work, I use 2-3 Linux distros, XP and Vista and at home another 2 distros and I cannot function without Foxmarks.
There are other browsers I like but the Firefox extensions are the reasons I stay along with Gmail Notifier, Cooliris, Speedial, Delicious and a few others.
