Everun Note dissected: Big things in tiny packages

10/09/2008 at 5:25 PM by Brad Linder 5 Comments

I’m still reluctant to call the Raon Digital Everun Note a netbook, thanks to its high $900 price tag. But that doesn’t make this tiny laptop any less attractive. It’s got a high resolution 1024 x 600 pixel, 7 inch display and a dual-core AMD Turion 64×2 CPU.  And it performs quite respectably on benchmarking tests.

Lest you think beauty is just skin deep, jkkmobile has posted some photos of this little laptop’s insides. While it doesn’t look to me like there’s a whole heck of a lot of room int here for adding extras like a 3G modem or GPS receiver, jkkmobile tends to look at laptops differently than I do, and he sees the space. So let the hacking begin!

Now if someone could just do a little hacking and slashing on the price…

Maybe if they bring it down to $799 it might squeeze into the netbook category?

I’d still like to actually get my hands on device like this in store, given its price, before even thinking about a purchase.

I live in Korea and have been in touch with Raon Digital. I have asked them to provide me one with English XP….that was before the recall. Now that they’ve pretty much fixed the problems they are balking on selling me one because they’re not selling to the domestic market at this time. The Korean won has nosedived compared to the US $ and their costs have gone way up. In 5 weeks, the won has plunged from 1,070/$ to about 1,400/$. Here is a graph of the two currencies….. http://www.x-rates.com/d/KRW/USD/graph30.html Needless to say, my frustration and disappointment continue. I’m still waiting for a final answer. They did send me a pdf describing 2 new models…one with a 1 GB AMD Sempron, a 16 GB SSD running Ubuntu, the other with the original 1.2 AMD dual core and a 24 GB SSD running XP Home or Pro. Pro is also… Read more »

Nice exchange rates graphing tool. I realize this is not an economics blog (doh), but I still don’t understand why US economic institutions are largely to blame for the current world-wide mess (at least we’re told this in the US) and yet other currencies keep dropping more than the US$ and giving it a higher exchange rate.

I would love to see a model with this same form factor and screen resolution using an Atom, which would reduce the real estate and power requirements for both the CPU and the cooling system. Sure, there would be a performance hit, but that’s not a priority for me in such a portable device. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful piece of engineering and a gem of a system from the looks of it.
