The other day the New York Times published an item that mentioned the possibility that Apple is already working on a new mobile device. The evidence? Reps from a search engine company mentioned they were seeing traffic from an “unannounced Apple product with a display somehwere between an iPhone and a MacBook.”

It could be a netbook, it could be a UMPC, it could be a tablet PC. But you know what, it could be none of the above. As Wired points out today, it could be a Hackintosh. Think about it. The reason a search engine company would be able to identify this unusual device is because it would identify itself as a machine running OS X, with a display of maybe 1024 x 600 pixels or 800 x 480 pixels.

In other words, Apple could be working on an experimental device and developers could be spending their time surfing the web on said device. Or the search engine employees may have encountered one of the handful of people who have installed OS X on an existing netbook like the MSI Wind or Lenovo IdeaPad S10.
