Evidence that Sony plans to launch a netbook continues to mount. Earlier today DigiTimes mentioned that OEM PC maker Quanta would soon be building netbooks for Toshiba and Sony. And now Laptop Magazine has received confirmation from a Sony executive that the company will be releasing a low cost ultraportable.

And that’s about it for now. No word on the dimensions, weight, price, or specs. And no word on a release date. According to the Laptop Magazine report, Sony is waiting to let other companies make the mistakes first. You know, because waiting for Asus, Acer, HP, Dell, and MSI to take over market share first isn’t a mistake.

Of course, Apple was hardly the first company to release an MP3 player. While being first may have worked so far for Asus in the netbook game, Sony could be gambling that staying out of the fray now will let the company launch something to much more fanfare later. Whenever that will be.

One reply on “Sony to develop a netbook… eventually”

  1. If Sony ever does come out with a netbook it will be crippled in the media playing department, only have a memory stick reader and will be $300 more than everyone else’s offering. Good reasons for them not to create one.
