Want a 3 pound laptop that runs OS X but don’t feel like dropping $1800 on a MacBook Air? If you’re willing to bend a few laws and install the operating system on unsupported hardware, you can make your own for less than a third the price. We’ve already seen OS X on the MSI Wind. But now it looks like you can also run the Mac operating system on an Asus Eee PC 1000H.
Cult of Mac has a story on how Scott Gilberterson crammed OS X onto an Eee PC 1000H without removing Windows XP. It turns out that the instructions for how to do this have been around for at least a few weeks at least, but I just discovered the article thanks to Boing Boing gadgets.
The only major problem with OS X on the 1000H is that the audio drivers don’t work. There’s no sound output. So if that’s a deal-breaker for you, you might want to find a different netbook to hack. Or spend the cash and buy a real MacBook.
sound now works. Look around the net for the fix.
Do note that if you follow that guide to read the comments – there are a lot of good tweaks and adjustments. A biggie includes better ACPI/battery support.
