I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to promote a new mini-laptop than by telling a good love story that happens to revolve around the use of a Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and an IM client. Oh wait, sure I can.  But apparently Lenovo decided to produce an odd little 6 minute video using those elements plus a teddy bear to promote the “always on” internet features of the S10 netbook in China.

The video’s in Chinese, but an Engadget reader was kind enough to provide a translation. You can check out the full video and my brief summary after the break. If the video doesn’t play, try visiting Youku.

If I understand this correctly, the basic story is boy breaks up with girl, she gets pissed off at him but later decides she misses him and starts IMing him because he said he’s always online. She seeks his advice on several occasions and after deciding it was good advice decides to go visit his apartment only to find that the furniture has all been mothballed.

She pulls out her Lenovo S10 and sends him a message asking where he is, and he says he’s right there. You then see a second S10 laptop with a teddy bear (a gift he had tried to give her) sitting in front of it. She then finds medical documents explaining that he has died of cancer. Spooky. But hey, just like his S10, he was always online. Fin.

  1. Somehow reminds me of the Blue Willow china legend, where the would-be lovers are killed by a storm but return as lovebirds.

More mysterious: the Chinese supply the rest of the world with millions of cuddly fuzzy-wuzzy teddy bears, but this one is hard plastic and has a star for one eye, a rainbow on his left leg and an X-rated jock strap 🙂 … but I think it’s making me want to race out and buy an S10 🙂

  2. Some cultural differences in advertising would be my take on this. I guess the Chinese would have a similarly difficult time making sense of a commercial with Jerry Seinfeld helping Bill Gates buy a pair of shoes at the mall as a way to promote the sales of Windows Vista. Oh, wait, I’m American and I don’t understand that commercial either!

  3. OMG that add is hilarious. Chinese soap opera is very exaggerated, and I am not the romantic type, but this is definitely not an advertisement you would find in the US.
