Not everyone wants to know how to rip apart a computer to install an internal Bluetooth dongle or perform other minor surgery. Sometimes all you need to know is how to upgrade the RAM or hard drive. And Laptop Magazine’s got instructions on how to do that with the recently released Lenovo IdeaPad S10.

Lenovo included a convenient access panel on the back of the laptop, so all you need to do is remove a few screws to pop out your hard drive or RAM and slap in a bigger, better model. But if you want more specific instructions, check out these two tutorials from Laptop Magazine:

Oh, and if that’s not enough for you, those crazy Laptop kids decided that while the access panel was open, they might as well throw an Intel X25-M solid state disk in there to see how the computer performs. Not surprisingly, if you replace the hard drive from a $450 computer with a $650, state of the art solid state disk, you get a performance boost. The battery lasted longer, the read and write speeds were faster, and Windows booted up more than 10 seconds faster. But for $650, it’s still totally not worth upgrading unless you’ve got a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket.

  1. i have an lenovo s10 32-bit and im looking for a way to upgrade my ram and people that i have been asking have told me that i can get as far as 3.5 ram. than other people have told me that i can only get 2g ram and i know how to install but im also worried about putting the right one in if the because some are $69 and others are less.($49) can someone help>

  2. upgrading the ram with non-lenovo SIMMs voids the warranty, so i would assume swapping the drive will, too. just saying.

    1. That’s why you always undo the changes if you have to send it in for service. Not just Lenovo either – I would say any manufacturer.

  3. Pretty expensive now, but it might be fun to install an SSD when the prices come down later. I notice the Laptop review says it runs a few degrees hotter than most, so this should bring down the temp some and maybe even keep the fan from running as much.
