Back when the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 was still just a rumor, Engadget found a leaked product roadmap that indicated Dell would be putting out several new mini-laptops. The Mini series would have a 8.9 inch display and flash memory while the company would also release a light-weight 12 inch laptop with a hard drive. The former was rumored to be called the Dell E, while the latter was the Dell E Slim.

Flash forward a few months, and the Dell E has been redubbed the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. And the Dell E? It looks like it will be the Dell Inspiron Z530. Well, probably not — unless Dell really wants to name this computer after the processor it will apparently use. Online retailer Tesco has a listing for the Z530 which seems to fit the specs that were originally posted for the E Slim.

While I’m reluctant to call a machine with a 12 inch display a netbook (it’s small for a laptop, but huge for a liliputer), but the Z530 E Slim will reportedly weigh just 2.6 pounds and sport a low power Intel Atom CPU just like it’s smaller Mini cousin.

Here’s a rundown of the specs:

  • Display: 12 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • CPU: 1.3GHz Intel Atom
  • Storage: 40GB 4200 rpm HDD
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Operating System: Ubuntu Linux (or Ubunto, as Tesco calls it)
  • Expansion: 3-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, VGA output
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet,
  • Color: Black
  • Optical Drive: No
  • Weight: 1.2kg (2.6 pounds)
  • Dimensions: 17.2cm x 29.9 cm or about 6.8″ x 11.8″
  • Price: £299 or about $420 US
  • Availability: October 6?

  1. Where the hell is the 12 inch Inspiron? Are Dell really going to bring it out? There are tech sheets around for the “E Slim” so where is it?

  2. I really want to know battery life and upgradeability of this little puppy.
Clearly it’s a Z530 + US15W (polusbo), this means a cut down chipset with in-build Mpeg4 decoder and only 2 chips combined to use less than 5 watts.
Intel will make a mint as the 530 is about half the size if the 230, the Eee 1000H is still attractive as it has 802.11n & 299GBP is only a bargain if the screen is LED lit.

  3. 420$?
Man, I will NEVER make up my mind.
Is it gonna be the Acer One in the hand or the mythical Dell Mini 9 w/Linux and now a 12 incher for 420?

Surprisigly low starting price. I would figure they would sell a 10 incher for 70$ more than the 9inch.

Of course, with all the typos, there could be a missing number somewhere.

Z530 is a HORRIBLE name stay with the slim.
Its like Dell Inspiron Mini 9, most people just skip the Inspiron part.

  4. If you read the Engadget post you learn that the picture is of an Inspiron 9 not the new 12″ one.
