Dell Inspiron Mini 9 boot time – VIDEO

09/12/2008 at 3:36 PM by Brad Linder 4 Comments

Finally an answer to the age-old question, how long does it take to boot Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9?

About 30-35 seconds. No real surprise there. This is about the same amount of time it takes to boot Windows XP on most netbooks that have Intel Atom processors and solid state disks.

Of course, let’s see how long it takes to get a usable desktop after you’ve been using your computer for a few months and you’ve loaded it full of programs that launch when Windows starts up. Windows XP always boots pretty quickly when it’s freshly installed (unlike Windows Vista, which typically takes 2-3 times longer than XP to load).

It’s too bad the Blacktop “instant-on” feature that was mentioned in the leaked presentation from June did not make it into the final product. It would have been great to be able to hit the power button and get to a web browser or e-mail client in a few seconds instead of having to wait for the full-blown OS to load (be it XP or Linux). That was the one unique feature of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 that I was waiting for but, alas, that’s not to be.

That feature IS in the Latitude E4200 though, but that machine is incredibly expensive and not meant for the average joe.

I just did a fresh install of win xp pro on my Inspiron Mini and it only takes 20 seconds to boot. Granted, I have not installed any apps yet.
