A few days ago we discovered pictures of what appears to be a 6-cell, high capacity battery plugged into an Acer Aspire One laptop. Now one astute Liliputing reader has spotted a product page at CDW for a 6-cell battery.

The battery isn’t available yet, and there’s no official picture. But there is a price: $119.99. For a battery that goes with a $380 computer. That’s right, the battery costs almost 1/3rd as much as the full computer.

Computer companies have a track record of charging ridiculously high prices for batteries. But it’s one thing to charge $120 for a battery for a $1000 computer. It’s quite another to ask users to pony up more than 30% of what they paid for a computer for the privilege of running it a few hours longer. Hopefully Acer will offer a version of the Aspire One that comes bundled with the higher capacity battery for a more reasonable price. But if you’ve already purchased an Aspire One with a 3 cell battery, it looks like you’ll just have to shell out the cash to upgrade your battery whenever this thing becomes available.

  1. I know its a while since your posting but I got a 160GB Aspire One with Intel Atom processor with 6 cell batter for $425 including 2 day UPS shipping from New York to California from J&R in New York. Its also the windows XP version. It is NOT supplied with a sleeve case but I picked up a DVD case that holds it, charger and cords and is ideal fit for $13.00 at Walmart

  2. @Charles
The Aspire does not have two SD slots, one of the slots is a Sony MS-Pro slot…..

    1. It does have 2 slots. 1 is for dedicated SD cards and the other is the multi card reader. I have a 16gb card in the stationary slot (fits flush with the case) for expanded backup aside from my hard drive and I just put in a 2gb SD in the other (extends from the case a little).

  3. So, you can buy an Aspire One for $425 with XP, then another $119 for a battery, just to match the same capacity the EEE PC 901 comes with off the shelf? At $544, I’d pay the extra $25 to get the EEE PC. At least you get a case with the EEE and a nice SSD – which isn’t an option for the Aspire One XP version.

The Aspire does appear to have a nice keyboard, and I do like the two SD card slots, but if it has a hard drive what do I need two slots for?

    Charles.

  4. Computer companies? How about power tool companies?

A Dewalt 18V Li-Ion battery for the DC927 hammer drill driver costs ~$140. The bare drill without a battery goes for ~$130.
