Online retailer Mwave is selling the MSI Wind laptop with a 6 cell battery. When MSI first announced the Wind laptop, the company promised to release the computer with a 6 cell battery for a low $499 price. But thanks to a global battery shortage, when the Wind was ready to start shipping, MSI was only able to include a 3 cell battery. MSI knocked the price of the 3 cell model down to $479 and said the 6 cell version would be available in September.

But Liliputing Forum member FDAMAN alerted us to the fact that Mwave has some units in stock right now for $570. That’s actually a bit more than Newegg is charging for the Eee PC 1000H, which has nearly identical specifications. But Newegg is out of stock on the Eee PC 1000H and doesn’t have any 6 cell Wind laptops yet.

In fact, even the MSI Shop doesn’t appear to have a listing, so this looks like an Mwave exclusive for now. If you find any other stores selling a 6 cell version of the Wind, let us know in the comments. I have to say, I’m a bit disappointed about the price hike. At $499, a 10 inch laptop with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU and a 6 cell battery would have been an amazing deal,. At $570, I’m not even 100% certain it’s a good deal. What do you think?

  1. In Serbia 3-cell battery MSI Wind XP version is 390euros…
Hope to see Asus 1000 or 6-cell MSI soon here….

  2. MSI Wind at $570? I’ll just go for another decent brand with 13″ display and dual core system.

    Jhun

  3. Yep, I agree with the Czech guy. You north americans are spoiled with your prices on hardware like this. Everything in Europe is a lot more expensive.
About 300£ for the Wind is very good.

  4. Am going to give the wind one more week and that’s enough of screwing around with them. Could have had the same thing with the ASUS months ago. Been searching on the sites and can’t even find anyone who has one or written a review on the wind. I’m beginning to think this is a figment of my imagination!

  5. FYI, Brad. I was in J&R this morning. No Wind. Having been scragged by XP this past week, I’m no longer eager to try it on an Atom CPU. What might save the Wind for me is if I could convince myself I’d be up to installing OS X on it!

  6. I’m not really sure its worth it…

I could get a Toshiba 13.3″, 1.87 Dual Core (not Core 2 Duo), 2GB, 250GB HDD, Webcam, WL B/G, 6 cell , and Vista for only $700 CAD.

I was really attracted to UMPCs/Netbooks 2 years ago when they first said they would be around the $200-$300 range, but now it seems to be around the $400-$600 range almost. With falling Laptop prices now-a-days, it seems that getting a normal laptop might be a better idea.

  7. Hey People..

I think it’s just a supply and demand thing going on – as we saw with the EEE PC 1000H, the manufactures have quite a bit of wiggle room with the price of these netbooks and are willing to drop the price to be competative. When Dell and Acer get into the mix next month I’m sure MSI and ASUS will respond with more price drops. I actually picked up the 1000H when the price dropped and I’m very happy with it…but I do feel I paid too much for it…but I was sick of waiting for the WIND…
I say hold your ground folks – wait it out a few more weeks…and by Christmas I bet we’ll be seeing netbooks at the intended 200-300 price…

    1. I agree with you FDA, I was tired of waiting for the 6 cell wind so i bought the eee pc 1000h after the price drop. I’m glad I did cause it’s cheaper than thee 6 cell wind now! They said the 6 cell wouldn’t be available until Sept so I just went for the eee. I think if you do wait until Sept, prices will go down cause the dell e will come out

  8. I think that when Dell launch the mini inspiron this price will down. The price of the eeepc already was cut by the competition. So, we can expect new discounts.

  9. You can still consider yourselves lucky – the 3-cell/Linux version of Wind sells for $700 here in the Czech Republic 🙁
So $570 for the 6-cell Wind is actually a bargain outside the US…
