As expected, the Eee PC 901 is showing up at online retailers like Amazon and Newegg. While Amazon still says the 901 is available for preorder, Newegg says it will ship the $599 PC within 3-5 days. But Engadget notes that Amazon has at least one bizarre listing for a $399 Eee PC 900 with the specs of an Eee PC 901.

To be fair, I’m pretty certain this listing is just a series of typos and not an actual bargain. But for $399, the product page says you can pick up a Linux Eee PC with an 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, 16GB of flash memory, and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU.

Odds are someone at Amazon will catch onto this and fix the page soon. But the question is, what happens to the few brave folks who are willing to place a $399 order today? Will they get an Eee PC 900 or a 901? Or will Amazon actually send out emails letting them know if there order has been adjusted?

  1. The $399/$449 (Linux/XP) prices are for the new 16G models of the 900 series. Amazon misprinted the reference to an Atom CPU. The 16G models have Celerons, as is the case for the earlier 900s (12G/20G). See Asus’ own webpage for the 900, which lists the 16G along with the 12G and 20G: https://eeepc.asus.com/global/900.htm
Note that the Asus webpage doesn’t show the 16G as having storage split into 2 “drives”. This seems to indicate they removed the 4G of primary (faster) SSD storage present in the older models.

  2. I ordered mine last week from PortableOne. They said they had them in stock, but unfortunately I did not clarify my question enough. They had the XP verison in stock, but I ordered the Linux version. I was excited, I thought I might have my new EEE early this week, but unfortunately it won’t come until next week. I’m bummed, but it looks like no one else has the Linux version up yet anyway, so I’m going to leave my order in with them. They seemed to have their ducks in a row, and when i asked about a shipping date they actually contacted ASUS and I got a reply from them, which was comforting to know they were tight. They said Linux versions are due out this week or early next week.

  3. Newegg just posted the Eee PC 901 for sale (XP version). I just got mine from HK yesterday, and am pretty impressed so far.
