While I wasn’t expecting the Acer Aspire One to hit the US for at least another few weeks, it looks like the computer is starting to show up at online retail sites. it’s not 100% clear whether companies like eWiz and CDW are shipping the Aspire One. I have a feeling what we’re actually seeing are preorder pages. But Engadget reports that they’ve heard tales of actual boxed products making their way out the door.

  1. Aspire One is $348 at Walmart. I got one and tried to tether my Blackberry but it crashed and didnt work for me. Please let me know if you can actually get a tether to work and how to do it? I took my ONE back but if I can figure out how to tether I will get it again….TY

  2. Small update. I’ve installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 on my Acer Aspire One. Almost everything except the wireless (of course) works out of the box, but after compiling some source code the wireless is working also. It doesn’t seem to detect either of the sd card readers, but thats something I’ll have to look into more. Boots up pretty quick. I think I’m getting a little over 2 hours in battery life, but that may be underestimated as I was compiling drivers as such. I was able to tether over bluetooth which was nice before my blackberry started acting up. I hope to post a boot up video of Ubuntu soon.

  3. If only I could get the Linux one with 1GB of RAM. I suppose, since it’s only $23 more expensive, I might just go for the XP one and just install Linux on it.

Now that this one is available, though, I don’t know whether to spring for it or wait and see how the Dell E pans out. The fact that it’s only available with the 3-cell battery is definitely disappointing.

  4. I picked up an Acer Aspire One from a local store today. Its pretty nice so far even though I haven’t been able to fully test it yet. I’m gonna install Ubuntu on it and see how that works out once I get the 8.04.1 iso downloaded. I will possibly take some unboxing photos also and post them up somewhere.

      1. I got it from a store in Huntsville, AL called Gigaparts. Here is a link

I paid a little more to get it locally with taxes and all, but it was purely an impulse buy and I don’t regret it so far. The MSI Wind had my attention but I figure I could use this for a couple of months until it gets easily available in the US.

        1. Hey-
That’s EXACTLY why I just bought the Acer , an interim toy- I was waiting for months for the WIND with the 6 Cell battery only to learn that’s not shipping for another 3 months at least. I can’t wait to get it…
