It looks like MSI has slashed the price of its upcoming Wind laptop to $399/$499. OK, I don’t know if you can actually call it a price cut, since the computer was officially launched today, but earlier we’d been hearing that MSI would be charging $399 for the Linux version and $549 for the Windows XP version.

The extra hundred bucks gets you a bit more than Windows XP. The $499 version also comes with 1GB of memory, which is twice what you’ll get with the Linux version. I’m not 100% certain whether the price includes a 6 cell or 3 cell battery.

The $499 Windows XP version should ship on June 16th for $499, while the Linux model will be available later this summer ofr $399. Now quick, somebody tell me which one I should buy!

  1. COOL!! – MWAVE.com has it up with an arrival date of 6/23 for 499, but no pre-orders. I’m glad they’re not starting off price gouging these units. EEE PC is going DOWN if they don’t drop their prices pronto…

  2. the one thing that is making me hesitant is the placement of the CTRL and FN keys. I know it’s not a huge deal, but WHY do so many laptop makers feel the need to switch them??? it’s such a major annoyance for me. I know I’d get used to it rather quickly, but COME ON. just being annoying. I can’t decide if I’m going to end up with the 901 or this. The OC button is nice, and the curves on this thing are beautiful, but that damn FN key might be the end of it.

  3. Based on the Laptop Mag review this one looks like a winner. For the extra ram, 6 cell battery and reasonably assured compatibility I would go for the XP version at that price. Can always put Linux on it later if needed. In any event, this should run at least as well as my 6 year old Compaq Presario 900 tank which is putting a dent in my shoulder. Now, where can I get one when its released on the 16th?

    1. I totally need one to play with too and can’t find any place selling it yet except for some overseas UK sites. All the other UPMCs had at least some major sites (like AMAZON and PC Connection) on board taking pre-orders months before their release so I’m thinking distribution of the WIND is going to be an issue…

      1. Well, MSI didn’t officially announce the computer until this morning. So I’d
give it a few days. I’m fairly certain you’ll be able to find preorder pages
at Amazon, Newegg, and other sites soon.

  4. Not big fan of XP, but 6 cell battery and 1gb ram for 100$, it’s very tempting offer. Especially, 6 cell is hard to spot these days.
