Intel: Retina laptop, desktop displays coming in 2013

Intel screen resolutions

Apple calls the displays on its iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad “retina” displays because they have so many pixels packed so tightly that it’s impossible for the human eye to tell one pixel from another while holding the device a comfortable distance away from your face. Android tablet makers are expected to step up their game soon, with Acer, Asus,…

Windows 8 to support higher resolution displays… but will apps?

Windows 8 screen sizes

The Apple iPad may squeeze a 2048 x 1536 pixel display into a 9.7 inch display, but most Windows laptops with 15.6 inch or smaller screens have 1366 x 768 pixels. In fact, good luck finding a desktop PC monitor with a higher resolution than 1920 x 1080. But it looks like that could change with Windows 8. Microsoft programmer…

How to enable Windows 8 Metro style apps on an older netbook

Windows 8 with Metro apps

Update: The guide below was written for Windows 8 Developer Preview and will not work with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview released on February 29th, 2012. But you can still enable Metro style apps on Windows 8 Consumer Preview — you just need to download a graphics driver that lets you adjust your screen resolution from the Intel download center….

Windows 8 paves the way for 10 inch, 1080p tablets

Microsoft scaling guidelines

Microsoft Windows has never done a great job of handling displays with high pixel densities. Every tablet and netbook I’ve reviewed which had a 1366 x 768 pixel display on a 10 inch or smaller screen has featured sharp graphics and text — so sharp that it can be hard to see what you’re looking at. Adjusting the DPI and…

Yahoo Mail Beta is faster, more feature-rich… not built for netbooks

Most netbooks have 1024 x 600 pixel display. While there are certainly a few exceptions, most Windows apps can run reasonably well at that resolution and most web pages are viewable with a minimal amount of scrolling. But for some reason, Yahoo Mail isn’t one of them. For the past few years, every time I’ve tried to check my Yahoo…

Is the 1024 x 576 pixel display on the way out?

HP

HP has begun offering the Mini 110 netbook with a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. Up until a few days ago you only had the option of ordering this netbook with a 1024 x 576 pixel display or a high resolution 1366 x 768 screen. The change doesn’t affect all models just yet. If you order the HP…

Acer launches Aspire One D250 with HD screen

PC Support

A few months ago Macles reported that Acer would be launching a version of the Aspire One 571 netbook with a high resolution 1280 x 720 pixel display. While I haven’t rally heard anything about that since, it looks like the Aspire One D250 is getting the HD screen treatment… at least in Norway. Norwegian retailer PC Support is taking…

A flood of 1366 x 768 pixel netbooks could be on the way

Taiwanese PC makers tell HKEPC that Intel is loosening some of its hardware restrictions for netbooks running low cost Windows XP licenses. According to the report, Intel had insisted that Atom N270 and N280 powered netbooks stick with 10 inch or smaller displays with 1024 x 600 pixel or lower resolutions. Of course, there have been a few exceptions, like…

High res updates: Dell Mini 10 w/HD in Europe, HP Mini 2140 w/HD in the wild

hd-2140

There are three netbooks that I’m aware of that currently have screen resolutions higher than 1024 x 600 pixel. The HP Mini 2140, Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and Gigabyte Touch Note T1028M are all available with 10 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel displays.  Not all of these computers are available around the world yet though. You can order the HP…

HP Mini 2140 high resolution display shipping in less than 2 weeks?

The HP Mini 2140 is set to become one of the few netbooks with a screen resolution higher than 1024 x 600. When HP first announced the laptop in January, the company promised that a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display would be an option. But so far only the 10.1 inch, 1024 x 576 pixel screen has been…
