Farewell UMID, we hardly knew ye

UMID might never have become a household name, but the company produced some of the more interesting mini-clamshell computers over the past few years, including the mBook line of devices. These little handheld devices looked like laptops, but with 5 inch displays and tiny keyboards, they were really probably better designed for handheld or tabletop use than, well… using while…

Always Innovating Smart Book is a tablet, netbook, phone, kitchen sink

Always Innovating generated a lot of buzz when it introduced the Touch Book last year. The device is a computer that can be used in either slate or notebook form, but unlike older convertible tablets you don’t simply twist the screen and fold it down over the keyboard. Instead you can actually remove the slate portion of the device from…

EKING introduces a portable tablet with a slide-out keyboard

Chinese device maker EKING is apparently working on a new mobile computer that appears to be a sort of touchscreen tablet with a 5 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. What makes it different from all the other touchscreen tablets out there is the fact that you can slide the screen to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. While the device looks…

Viliv N5 handheld computer reviews

The Viliv N5 looks like the love child of a netbook and a smarpthone. Or rather, it looks like a netbook that’s abotu the size of a smartphone. It has a QWERTY keybaord, an Intel Atom processor, and runs Windows 7. But it has a 4.8 inch display and can almost fold up and fit in your pocket. Dynamism is…

Viliv N5 handheld mini-notebook now shipping in the US

The Viliv N5 is kind of what you’d get if you crossed an Intel Atom powered netbook with… something smaller. Basically, this little guy has all the specs of a relatively mundane 10 inch netbook, but packed into a device with a 4.8 inch display that’s small enough to fold up and put in your coat pocket. It’s now available…

UMID mbook Special Edition, now with faster CPU

The UMID mbook BZ is a mobile internet device with a QWERTY keyboard and a 4.8 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. I have a habit of calling 10 inch netbooks “mini-laptops,” but this thing is best described as an itty bitty laptop. Now UMID has released a special edition of this little guy, with twice the RAM and a…

Dynamism to bring the Viliv N5 handheld to the US… soon

The Viliv N5 is a teeny tiny laptop (or an average sized MID) that we first spotted at CES in January. Now it looks like the mobile device should be available in the US relatively soon. The Viliv N5 is a little small for comfortable touch-typing, but this little mobile internet device has a 4.8 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel…

Inventec Dr. Eye MID crosses a netbook and smartphone

Inventec’s Dr. Eye MID (Mobile Internet Device) has all the specs of a good smartphone… plus an odd name and a QWERTY keyboard that makes the device look like a tiny laptop. The Dr. Eye MID has a 4.8 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, a 600MHz Marvell ARM-based CPU, and runs Google Android 2.1. The device comes in three…

EviGroup Wallet mobile internet device with Android now shipping

The good news is that eviGroup has begun shipping a 5 inch Android-powered MID (Mobile Internet device) for just €199 in Europe. That’s about $253 US. The bad news is that like almost every other Android powered tablet I’ve seen in recent months, the eviGroup Wallet ships with an antiquated version of Google’s mobile operating syste, The MID runs Google…

NEC N-08B pocket-sized mini-laptop hits Japan

NEC has introduced a mini-laptop for the Japanese market that looks like a notebook — if you could fold up a notebook and fit it in your pocket. The NEC N-08B has a 4.6 inch, 854 x 480 pixel display with a fairly wide bezel around the edges. That provides enough space fro a decent sized keyboard. I’m not convinced…

Sharp IS01 Android powered mini-laptop now available in Japan… sort of

It’s been a month or so since Sharp introduced the world… or rather, Japan to the new Sharp IS01 mobile device. And a developer version of this little guy is now available in Japan.
