How to enable Windows 8 Metro style apps on an older netbook

Windows 8 with Metro apps

Windows 8 features a new user interface designed for touch-friendly devices such as tablets. But you don’t need a touchscreen to use the new Metro Style user interface. You just need a display with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or higher. Unfortunately that rules out almost every netbook ever made, since most netbooks have 1024 x 600…

Hack to increase the screen resolution on Windows 7 netbooks

Roughly 90% of all 10 inch netbooks on the market today have 1024 x 600 pixel displays. OK, I made that number up off the top of my head, but aside from a handful of models with 1024 x 576 or 1366 x 768 pixel screens, it’s pretty much true. Most netbooks have the same display resolution. And while it’s…

Driver update kind of brings higher resolutions to netbooks higher resolution

The vast majority of 9 and 10 inch netbooks with Intel Atom chips and GMA 950 graphics have the same native screen resolution: 1024 x 600 pixels. While that’s generally good enough to view most web pages, some web content doesn’t really fit on a display that small. And some programs won’t even run if you don’t have a 1024…

Is the 1024 x 576 pixel display on the way out?

HP

[/caption] HP has begun offering the Mini 110 netbook with a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. Up until a few days ago you only had the option of ordering this netbook with a 1024 x 576 pixel display or a high resolution 1366 x 768 screen. The change doesn’t affect all models just yet. If you order the…

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 gets 1280 x 720 screen option… in Europe

s10-2 hd

[/caption] A few months back there was a rumor going around that the Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 would eventually be available with a higher resolution 1280 x 720 pixel display. And it looks like eventually means today, because the netbook is available from a number of retailers in Germany with the high resolution display for about 349 Euros (about $499 US)….

HP Mini 2140… HD!

mini_2140-lenovo_s10-comparison

[/caption] Editor’s Note: When Tommy approached me about writing this article, I had no idea it would come on a day when Acer and Lenovo both announced plans to release high resolution versions of their netbooks. As it turns out, that makes today a great time to talk about the pros and cons of higher resolution displays on Intel Atom-powered…

A thorough examination of netbook screen sizes

screen-sizes

You may have noticed that netbook screens tend to come in standard sizes with standard display resolutions. That’s because there are a handful of display panel makers that actually supply most computer makers with the screens that find their way into netbooks. Eee PC Italia put together a good list of existing screen sizes and resolutions for netbooks (as well…
