Rockchip’s RK3399 processor is a hexa-core chip with two ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. It features Mali-T864 graphics, support for 4K video playback, HDMI 2.0 output, and Rockhip says it’s designed to work in a range of devices including tablets, notebooks, TV boxes, and VR headsets.

The company first unveiled the RK3399 chip at CES in January, but when Charbax from ARMDevices caught up with the Chinese chip maker recently, he discovered that the processor is ready for mass production, which means we could see the first RK3399-powered devices in the coming months.

Among other things, the processor supports dual USB 3.0 Type C connectors, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-channel memory, and hardware-accelerated H.265, H.264, and VP9 video decoding.

Rockchip is showing off a few reference devices including a tablet and a VR headset, but promotional materials also show other devices like laptops and set-top-boxes, which suggests we could see the RK3399  processor in other products such as Chromebooks or Android-based TV boxes or mini PCs.

For VR systems, Rockchip says the processor can handle 90 Hz refresh rates, low-latency rendering, and high-precision eye tracking.
