Microsoft has announced that its Windows 10 free upgrade offer for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 users ends July 29th. So what about that little Windows icon Microsoft added to your taskbar last year… the one that prompts you to upgrade? Yeah, it’s going away too.
WinBeta reports that Microsoft will first disable the “Get Windows 10” app and eventually remove it from affected PCs.
The move makes sense: Microsoft pushed the app to users to promote the free Windows 10 update. Once the offer ends, you’ll have to spend $119 on a full Windows 10 license if you want to update to the new operating system. I know some people found the app nagging you to upgrade annoying… but an app nagging you to spend money on an upgrade would undoubtedly be even more annoying.
This all assumes that the Windows 10 upgrade offer will end on July 29th. The company recently published a blog post suggesting that it’s on track to end the program a year after launch… but if you read it carefully you’ll note that while Microsoft is urging people to upgrade by the 29th, the company stops short of saying that there are no plans to extend the upgrade offer. So it’s possible that free updates might not end in July.
