The Alcatel Xess is an Android device with a 17.3 inch full HD touchscreen display, a 1.5 GHz octa-core MediaTek processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. It’s basically a tablet that’s big enough to use as a TV… or a desktop computer.

It runs a custom version of Android called Phoenix OS that lets you view apps in resizable windows that you can position anywhere on the screen… much as you would with a desktop operating system.

Update: Actually, the Xess will only ship with Phoenix OS in China. The US version of the device ships with Android 5.1 and an optional “Xess Mode” which lets you view a few different apps in  three-panel mode.

First unveiled in September, the Xess will be available for purchase in the US starting April 22nd for $499.

The Xess features a 9,600 mAh battery which allows you to use the system whether it’s plugged in or not, and there’s a quick release charger designed to make it easy to unplug the Xess if you want to move it from you office to your kitchen, for example.

Alcatel imagines that this sort of device could come in handy in the kitchen, where it can be used to display recipes or instructional videos while you cook, or help you keep your grocery shopping list up to date.

It should also be able to handle video streaming and other multimedia tasks, as well as games. Alcatel is shipping the Xess in the US with kid-friendly game and video apps from Nickelodeon. You can also download other apps from the Google Play Store.

It seems like a few of the specs have been altered since the Xess was first announced. It has more RAM and a slightly smaller battery than expected (unless Alcatel was just rounding up the battery capacity). But one thing that hasn’t changed is that the all-in-one has a stainless steel case and an adjustable kickstand that lets you position the tablet at multiple angles so that it’s easy to view whether you’re standing, sitting, or holding the device in your lap.

There’s also a stylus that slides into a slot in the back of the system when you’re not using it, a microSD card reader with support for up to 64GB of removable storage, and a front-facing camera for video chat or selfies. Unsurprisingly, there’s no rear camera, because what are the chances you’d want to hold up a 17.3 inch monitor to snap a photo?
