Now that you can run Remix OS 2.0 on hundreds of desktop and notebook computers, some folks have been wondering why you couldn’t run the latest version of the operating system on the first device to ship with Remix OS.
Now you can.
Remix OS 2.0 is now available for Jide’s Remix Ultra Tablet.
Remix OS is a custom version of Android with a user interface that makes Android feel like a desktop operating system. There’s a taskbar, a desktop, and support for running apps in resizable windows that you can move around the screen.
Version 2.0 makes it easier to resize windows, includes an improved file manager, and a number of other updates that really make the operating system feel more like it was designed for keyboard and mouse input.
The Android-based operating system is developed by Chinese startup Jide, which was founded by former Google employees. The team unveiled Remix OS at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, along with the Remix Ultra Tablet, a Microsoft Surface-like tablet with a built-in kickstand and a keyboard stand.
The tablet was the first product that customers could buy if they wanted to try Remix OS. These days there’s also a $70 Remix Mini desktop PC as well as a handful of notebooks and tablets from other companies. And Jide released an alpha version of Remix OS for PC recently that lets you try the operating system on many recent computers with Intel or AMD processors.
If you want to install Remix OS 2.0 on an Ultra Tablet, you’ll need to flash a new ROM that will wipe your data, so make sure to backup any important files.
