Lenovo’s latest Windows tablet has a 12 inch display, an Intel Core M7 Skylake processor, support an optional digital pen, and an optional keyboard dock.

But what really makes the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet unusual is that you can attach optional modules to add functionality. Just clip the module to the bottom of the device and you can get extra battery life, a projector, or other features.

At launch, Lenovo plans to offer three modules:

  • Productivity Module: This accessory adds up to 5 hours of extra battery life, providing up to 15 hours of total run time. It also features an HDMI port and full-sized USB 3.0 port.
  • Presenter Module: Clip on this module to add an HDMI port and a pico projector to the tablet.
  • 3D Imaging Module: use an Intel RealSense 3D camera to scan real-world objects in 3D.

Lenovo will also offer a ThinkPad keyboard dock with a TrackPoint system.

The modular nature of the ThinkPad X1 Tablet might make it stand out… but you could also add cameras, projectors, and battery life to plenty of tablets by picking up USB accessories. I guess what Lenovo’s offering has going for it is the compact size. The modules attach firmly to the side of the tablet, so you won’t have any extra wires dangling around.

The tablet weighs less than 1.8 pounds. Add the keyboard and the combined weight comes to about 2.4 pounds, making the ThinkPad X1 a pretty compact alternative to an ultrabook. The modules will add a little weight.

The ThinkPad X1 Tablet has a 2160 x 1440 pixel display, USB Type-C support, optional 4G LTE-Advanced, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. Since the tablet has a low-power Core M processors, it also features a fanless design.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet should be available in February for $900 and up. The modules range in price from about $150 to $280. The optional active stylus will set you back another $50.
