HBO is launching a new subscription-based service that lets you stream movies, TV shows, and other content over the internet without a cable or satellite subscription.

HBO NOW launches in April and a subscription will cost $14.99 per month. There’s just one catch: at launch HBO Now will only be available for Apple devices.

Customers who subscribe during April will get their first month of the service for free.

HBO already has an internet streaming service called HBO Go, but currently it’s only available to folks who are already paying HBO customers through a traditional TV package.

The new HBO NOW service will be more of a rival to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime… offering current HBO programs and the company’s back catalog. At $14.99 per month the service costs almost twice as much as Netflix, but it will include content that’s not currently available anywhere else: the entire HBO catalog of content.

HBO announced the HBO Now service at an Apple event today… where Apple also revealed that the Apple TV set-top-box is getting a price cut. The price will drop from $99 to $69.

The service will be available to users of Apple TV, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices.

  1. The TV companies complain about piracy, and then do things like this. What next, making it so I can’t watch a programme because I don’t have a Panasonic TV? Seems desperation for a failed product.

  2. $15/month for a clear conscience. For a completely clear conscience I would also need to pay $9/month for netflix and $10/month for google music. What’s the difference between a little infringement and complete infringement? Effectively it is between $0 to $35/month. Just saying.

    1. Decent internet is 40 dollars a month with all the taxes it comes out to 60 dollars if not more in the USA. What we need is internet theft given those ridiculous prices. How does one tap a cable to get back some of that money we are being robbed of?

  3. Too bad it’s only on Apple devices. Looks like I will be waiting a while longer for my HBO shows.

  4. I can imagine this rationale: Apple customers are more likely to spend extra on premium products.

  5. Argh. I don’t want to purchase Apple products to watch HBO without a cable subscription.
