So you thought that new 802.11ac WiFi router your just bought was pretty fast? Samsung says it’s developing next-gen WiFi hardware that could be up to 5 times faster than today’s devices.

Samsung’s new 60 GHz 802.11ad WiFi technology supports data transfer speeds of up to 4.6Gpbs or 575MB per seconds.

At those speeds you should be able to transfer a 1GB file between devices in about 3 seconds. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to download a movie from the internet that quickly — what we’re talking about here is speeding up your home or work WiFi network, not the download or upload speeds you get from your internet service provider.

Still, the new technology should make transfering files between devices on you network a lot faster. That could include laptop and desktop computers, tablets, smartphones, smart TVs, game consoles, and set-top-boxes, among other things.

Samsung says its 60 GHz WiFi technology eliminates the co-channel interference you get with today’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi technologies.

Don’t go throwing out your router just yet though. Samsung doesn’t expect to start commercializing the technology until 2015, when the company hopes to start building into communications, smart home, audio and video, and internet of things devices.

While Samsung is one of the first companies to announce it’s getting ready to release 60 GHz, 802.11ad hardware soon, it’s not the only company working on the technology, which is also known as WiGig. We could see more announcements like this in the coming months and years.

  1. The higher frequency won’t penetrate walls – super fast across the room, but it still needs to fall back to the old bands to talk across the house.

  2. Now this can be create real Cord Cutting!! enough of all those crazy PC connecting cords.
Now please make sure you add wireless charging!!

  3. I’m still waiting for my Ubuntu Wifi driver to support 802.11AC speeds.

  4. With prices being so high on current AC hardware (and public confusion over different classifications within the spec), I think most people are skipping AC out entirely and are staying with N. I know I’m going to wait for AD before upgrading my network.
