HP plans to launch a cheap Windows tablet called the HP Stream 7. While the company hasn’t officially announced the product yet, Microsoft mentioned the tablet in July as an example of inexpensive new Windows machines on the way.

Now the folks at Mobile Geeks have spotted a retail listing for the tablet which gives us a better idea of what to expect.

Update: There’s also an 8 inch model, cleverly called the HP Stream 8.

The HP Stream tablets are small Windows devices Intel Bay Trail chips, and a starting price of  €179 in Europe. The 8 inch model will sell for €249 and up. Both models will likely be cheaper when they launch in the United States.

At those prices, you shouldn’t expect premium features… because you won’t get them. Still, the HP Stream 7 looks like it should at least be competitive with Toshiba’s recently-launched Encore 2 tablet which sells for $199.

The HP Stream 7 features a 7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, an Intel Atom Z3735G processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It runs Windows 8.1 with Bing software.

The Stream 8 has similar hardware, but a larger screen.

Neither tablet has a full HD display, a super-speedy processor, or even a front-facing camera (there’s one on the back though). But the HP Stream 7 sells for about half the price of an iPad mini with Retina display.

HP is also expected to offer a Stream 7 model with support for 3G cellular networks.

HP will also likely launch a $199 laptop called the HP Stream 14 soon.

  1. I wish they would put micro hdmi on these or make a dock so you can hook it up to monitor and use it as a desktop. Well I guess I could do that with my cracked asus t100 but 32gb is not enough space for windows. Since the asus cracked I got a dell venue 11 pro and have been using that ever since. But now I have 5gb free out or 128gb (more like 90 after deducting os) and might upgrade ssd to 256gb but that costs $150…..

  2. If only it was a “premium” 7″ Windows 8 tablet, I’d get it. Of course, for a higher price.

  3. I’m all for cheap Win8.1 tablets, but for roughly the same price you can get a decent first gen BayTrail tablet, that is actually more powerful. DV8P for one seems a way better deal with 2GB of RAM and front facing camera, or an Iconia W4 that also has a HDMI. This thing could sell for $100-120, or could be handed out as a “classmate PC”, thou I shudder when I think about the performance on 1GB of RAM or handling a desktop app on 7″…

    1. i have to agree here as the older Acer ICONIA W4-820-Z3742G03aii – Atom 1.33 GHz – 8″ – 2 GB Ram – 32 GB HDD

comes with quad cores and Intel® Quick Sync Video, shame they dont do a real cpu thats got generic AVX2 SIMD 4 core/8 thread for these prices to seed the world markets for intel/windows mobile uptake, its simple the hp-stream-7-tablet is just junk as its not got generic avx2 SIMD and/or hardware assisted Quick Sync today and no end consumer in the know will be buying this HP junk if they know whats good value today.
