Oyster is a subscription-based eBook service that lets you read all the eBooks you’d like for $10 per month. while that might not be a great value for casual, occasional readers, folks who buy a lot of books can save a lot of money with this sort of Netflix-for-eBooks type of service.

Up until recently Oyster was only available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users.

Now you can use Oyster on Android as well.

The Oyster apps is available as a free download from the Google Play Store, and you can try out the service for free for 30 days before spending money on a subscription.

The company’s new Android app works on phones and tablets, lets you use volume buttons or screen taps to turn pages, and supports new typefaces, themes, and book detail pages — which are also rolling out to Oyster for iOS.

Oyster says its app should work on all Android devices including the Amazon Kindle Fire line of tablets, but the app isn’t available from the Amazon Appstore. Instead you’ll have to download and sideload the app manually.

Like Netflix, Oyster’s content library is limited. But with more than half a million books to choose from, odds are that you’ll find something worth reading. Whether that’s worth $10 per month is something you’ll have to figure out for yourself.

  1. Title is confusing. “Subscription” like used in the first line works great.
