Google’s Chromecast media streaming device gets a little more useful every time an app developer adds support for the Google Cast service allowing you to stream content from your phone, tablet, or PC web browser to a TV.

New Chromecast-compatible apps launch nearly every day… but today’s a big day for sports fans, because Google’s announced that two major sports apps now support Chromecast.

Crunchyroll and Google+ Photos also now support Chromecast.

Sports

The WatchESPN app for Android and iOS now supports Chromecast, as does the Major League Soccer Matchday app. They join the Major League Baseball app which launched Chromecast support in April.

The WatchESPN app will let you stream live sports events to your TV… if you’re already paying for an ESPN subscription as part of your cable, satellite or other premium TV service. In other words… you could also just turn on your cable box to watch the same live sporting events — but now you can use WatchESPN and Chromecast to stream those events in rooms in your house that might not have a cable box.

Major League Soccer’s Matchday app, on the other hand, could be a cord-cutting soccer fan’s dream. You can sign up for MLS Live subscription plans for $15.99 per month or $49.99 for the full season.

Google+ Photos

Google has also announced that Google+ Photos for Android and iOS also now work with Chromecast, allowing users to stream photo albums and videos from their phone to a TV.

Crunchyroll

Anime fans can tune into thousands of hours of programming, and if you pay for a subscription you can access titles just an hour after they air in Japan.

Crunchryoll also features live-action content including Korean drama, K-pop, and Japanese music.

  1. Sorry same crap deal. Pay for cable: $$$. Pay for sports pack upgrade cause what I want to watch isn’t included: $$$. Now, pay for internet and have a computer to watch it on: $$$. And a router so I have wifi: $$$. Then buy Chromcast ($$$) and install the viewer App (Free !!!!) and configure it.

So now I get to pay 4 times (cable, sports pack, internet, chromcast) all to watch sports that used to be Free. I’ll pass. If ESPN wants to make viewing free, I’ll watch. Otherwise its FirstRow for me or I won’t watch at all.

    1. You don’t pay for internet already? You don’t already have a computer/tablet/smartphone? Most internet service comes with a wireless router these days. Do you have any friends? If so, do any of them pay for sports? Just sayin…

    2. Some online ESPN content is provided without television service if your broadband provider has worked a deal with them.

      1. I think that mostly ended when ESPN 3 became watch ESPN app, at least for games and streams of tv channels.

    3. Do you have a parent, sibling, child, or other relative that aren’t cord cutters? My Grandmother doesn’t stream any content, but she subscribes to all the premium channels and I have her login. It’s an ethical loophole because she’s wasting her privileges and I’m not going to pay a dime anyway.
