Chinese device maker Xiaomi has unveiled its first tablet, and while the Mi Pad looks like an iPad mini it packs Google Android 4.4 KitKat with Xiaomi’s custom MIUI user interface. It’s also expected to be one of the first tablets to ship with an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor which should give it some heavy duty gaming chops.

Xiaomi has a reputation for offering high-quality hardware at low prices, and it looks like the Mi Pad keeps up the tradition: Prices will start at CNÂ¥1,499, or about $240 US.

Unfortunately there’s no word on whether you’ll actually be able to buy a Mi Pad in the US. While the company has been expanding its international presence, Xiaomi doesn’t currently sell any of its phones or other devices in the States.

The Mi Pad features a 7.9 inch, 2048 x 1536 pixel display and packs NVIDIA’s 2.2 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor with 192-core graphics.

It features 2GB of RAM and comes with either 16GB or 64GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card slot for up to 128GB of additional storage space.

The tablet has an 8MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing camera, stereo speakers, and features 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 6700mAh battery.

Xiaomi plans to launch an “open beta” program in China in June. It’s not clear when the tablet will be available to the general public.

If the specs look familiar, by the way, that’s because they are: A device with similar hardware showed up in online benchmarks recently, where the tablet was described as an NVIDIA Mocha. It’s not clear that the Xiaomi Mi Pad is the Mocha, but it looks like it could be based on some sort of reference design from NVIDIA: Both tablets have Tegra K1 chips, 7.9 inch displays with 326 pixels per inch, and 2GB of RAM.

So even if the Mi Pad doesn’t make it to US shores, there’s reason to think that other tablets like the Mi Pad might be available this summer.

  1. They copied the apple presentation and graphic design to. what do you expect when you get another country to make all of your products for you with slave labor? it is also kind of hard to feel bad for apple or even call them an american company when they pay zero taxes. screw apple and https://goo.gl/JLzueu

  2. I hate these skins that don’t have an app tray in the launcher.
I guess there’s custom launchers, but I’m waiting for some CM 11 on this!!!

  3. Apple sucks monkey balls , Xiaomi will beat it’s ass any time! It’s just that Apple is famous for being a hipster machine manufacturing factory.

  4. But it’s likely that the “other tablets that may be available this summer” won’t have that price tag.

  5. not bad. nice price and expandable+android, can’t beat that. I don’t know how they can get is so cheap with all the features. who in their right mind would buy an ipad rather than this?

    1. Agreed! , I’m definitely getting one online as soon as it’s released to the Chinese market!

  6. I’m amused by the fact that these tablets are made to look like iOS devices while in fact they are Android devices. When the first wave of cheap Android tablets began to be available, they all featured screens that looked like iPads. It appears nothing has changed. Even the name is evocative of an iOS device.

As zdanee mentioned below, I’ve also given up on Android devices now that Windows tablets have become affordable. For me, it’s an Asus Vivotab 8 Note with a Wacom pen/digitizer. Art apps have always been important to me and having a pressure sensitive screen is like a dream come true. It’s not perfect but it certainly works very well.

    1. I don’t know where you’ve been getting your information from, long before iPad Mini showed up, Chinese manufacturers have been making 8 inch tablets with 3:4 ratio. But again, this looks nothing like the iPad.

  7. That’s pretty sweet! If I’m ever into mobile gaming again, I’ll definitely consider this as well. As for now, I just sold my Android tablet and switched to a Dell Venue 8 Pro.

  8. Oooh! I really hope someone else makes the same tablet, I really like the looks of the device but want western support if I need to return it… that and I’m not a fan of skinned android, stock is where it’s at (or ideally stock with custom firmware available)
