Chip maker MediaTek has unveiled a new processor aimed at multimedia tablets. The MediaTek MT8127 is a 1.5 GHz quad-core, ARM Cortex-A7 processor with ARM Mali-450 MP4 graphics and support for HEVC (H.265) video playback.
HEVC stands for High Efficiency Video Encoding, and it’s basically a next-gen technology designed to succeed H.264. It doubles the data compression which means that you should basically see the same quality of video in files that are as little as half the size.
That could come in handy in a few different scenarios. You might be able to fit more HD videos on a device with limited storage, for instance. Or you could use less bandwidth while streaming video from the internet. HEVC technology could also reduce the bandwidth required by 4K or higher resolution videos… the format supports resolutions up to 8192 x 4320 pixels, also known as 8K.
MediaTek says its new quad-core chi pis designed for devices with up to a 1920 x 1200 pixel display and up to 13MP cameras. It also supports NFC and Miracast wireless display features.
The Alcatel OneTouch PIXI 8 Android tablet will be one of the first devices to use the new chip, along with the previously announced Cube U25GT.
But what about 4K decoding? Will it be able to play 4K movies?
I would love to see a set top box with this. With XBMC maybe?

Roku uses these Mediatek processors. This will probably end up in some Roku 4 box.
