Samsung may be working on a new 7 inch tablet that looks almost exactly like a smartphone… albeit a smartphone with an enormous screen.

Details for the Samsung SM-T2558 showed up recently at the website for China’s wireless regulatory service TENAA. At first glance the photos seem to show something that looks like a phone. But the 7 inch screen suggests that this is a tablet (or an in-between device sort of like the Asus FonePad).

The Samsung SM-T2558 features a 7 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel capacitive touchscreen display, a 1.2 GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for up to 128GB of additional storage.

It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software, has an 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera, and supports 3G and 4G networks in China.

It’s not clear if Samsung has any plans to offer this model outside of Asia, but the specs suggest it could be a cheap device for folks that aren’t sure if they want a phone or a tablet… the same market that the Asus FonePad seems to be designed for.

  1. I’vr got a 6″ Ascend Mate which leaves some spare rom in my hand and pocket. A 7″ X1 is on its way. It’s a phone.

    1. probably, but 7″ is way to big for a phone. my 4.3″ phone is the perfect size.

      1. I like my 5 inch phone just fine, but 7 seems like a bit much. I like to just put my phone in my pocket. I admit though, having a tablet sized phone would elimate another device that I have, and it’s kind of appealing.
I think it depends on whether you usually hold your phone up to your head or hold it in your hands trying to read the screen.

        1. True enough, especially for people who prefer to use a ear piece instead of holding the phone to their head…

And they could either keep the tablet in a bag, satchel, or in a large cargo pants pocket, etc.

Cooler climates can help with making it more convenient to wear jackets, like Scottevest, with large enough pockets as another alternative…

But the Asus phone that docks into a tablet is probably more practical for most people… At least until flexible display technology gets practical and we can have resize-able screens that can roll out to the size we need at any given time…
