Fake leather: It’s not just for Samsung phones, tablets, and Chromebooks anymore. Samsung Germany has unveiled a new premium ultrabook with Samsung’s new favorite material covering the lid.
The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Style is a 15.6 inch laptop with a full HD display, up to 12 hours of battery life, and a fake leather panel fake stitched to the top for some reason (I suppose it does help prevent fingerprint smudges).
It’ll be on display at the CeBIT trade show in Germany this week.
The new laptop has an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB solid state drive. It features 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and Gigabit Ethernet and features 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI and VGA ports, and an SDXC card slot.
Samsung’s new notebook will ship with Windows 8.1 software, comes in black or white, and while I’m always a bit wary of calling laptops with 15.6 inch displays ultrabooks, it is reasonably thin and light. The laptop measures 14.7″” x 9.8″ x 0.7″ and weighs about 4.3 pounds.
It has a lot in common with the ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. But this model’s a tad thicker and heavier and it has that unusual top coat of fake leather.
There’s no word on whether Samsung plans to offer the ATIV Book 9 Style in the United States.

I think their next design should involve leopard print.
Samsung is going to sleep on Laptops…
Faux leather is one of the most awful materials overall, and for a laptop lid in particular; an easy to scratch low class trash material. And I know Samsung’s leather imitations from other products. cheap and unpleasant to touch.
Worse yet, in 2014, Samsung’s “premium” ultrabook is still hobbled by a lousy 4GB of RAM, that was already out of place and out of class in 2012.
I’ll just keep my 2013 NP900x3F. It looks better and I’m missing no positively noticable technical advance at all. On the contrary, I’ve got a non-reflective, smudge-free display currently impossible to get.
