HP has added a new budget Android tablet to its lineup. And by new, I mean it’s bringing a cheap tablet the company launched in China last year to the United States, giving it a new name, and selling it for $170.
Meet the HP 8 1401.
The tablet features a 7.85 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display, an Allwinner A31s ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 3800mAh battery for up to 7 hours of run time.
It has a microSd card slot, 802.11n WiFi. There’s a 2MP rear fix-focused rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera. The tablet runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
The HP 8 1401 measures 7.9″ x 5.4″ x 0.3″ and weighs about 11 ounces.
Overall, the HP 8 1401 is a spectacularly unremarkable device that has the kind of specs you’d find in a cheap Chinese tablet or an entry-level Archos device. But it’s also priced accordingly. At about $170 it’s cheaper than most recent 7 inch tablets from Amazon, Asus, Google, or Samsung and HP’s tablet could appeal to folks who want a cheap Android tablet that’s about the size and shape of an iPad mini.
Looking for something cheaper? The $150 HP Slate 7 Plus is a 7 inch tablet with a 1280 x 800 pixel display and NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.

Who is it made by?
Really HP?
The one nice thing I can say about HP is that the one I reviewed didn’t just have 5 hours battery life; it had 5 hours of video+Wifi+backlight. That was the first that a tablet actually exceed a maker’s battery life estimate.
Awful price. This should be less than $130. Dell Venue 8 Android is a much better deal and it often goes on sale for less than $150.
