Qualcomm makes some of the most powerful chips for smartphones and tablets, and now the company is adapting its processors to work with smart TVs and set-top boxes. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 802 is a 1.8 GHz quad-core processor with Adreno 330 graphics that’s based on the same Krait technology as the chips in high-end phones from Samsung, HTC, and LG, among others.

Update: Nevermind. Qualcomm’s “decided not to commercialize” the new chip due to lack of demand.

The Snapdragon 802 supports Ultra HD display resolutions, which is another way of saying 4K, or TVs with 3840 x 2160 pixel screens. Qualcomm says the chip can also handle simultaneous tasks such as playing a game while engaging in a video conference.

The new chip isn’t just a Snapdragon 800 slapped in a TV. Qualcomm added broadcast, analog and digital input and output support and developed Android 4.4 Kitkat-based software that device makers can use to build applications for the platform.

Qualcomm’s chip also supports dual-band 802.11ac wireless connections.

The company will start offering samples of the chip in the next few months, and products based on the technology could hit the streets in late 2014.
