Chinese device maker Vivo has officially launched its first phone with a 6 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel display. Even with a relatively large screen for a smartphone, the Vivo Xplay3S manages to pack 490 pixels per inch.
The phone may be one of the first with a 2K display resolution, but it likely won’t be the last. Several other companies have already announced plans for similar devices. The pixel race is on.
It’s questionable whether most folks would actually be able to tell the difference between a 2K display and a 1080p screen on a phone-sized device. But plenty of folks were skeptical when the first phones with 1920 x 1080 pixel screens hit the market, yet they seem to be here to stay.
Anyway, if you happen to live in China you may soon be able to pick up the Vivo Xplay3S with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE support, a fingerprint reader, and a 3200mAh battery.
A model with 32GB of storage and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is expected to sell for less than $600.

This is finally getting to the point where I’m interested in upgrading my phone…specs like this are going to be hard to beat for a while. Thing better have a microSD slot of some type on it though.
I don’t think 2K means what you seem to think it means. 2K means 2,000 which is closer to 1920 than it is to 2560. In other words 1920×1080 is already a 2K resolution.
And, you know, they can stop at 1980 on a phone. That is already insanely high for any screen up to at least 8 inches let alone 5 or 6 inches. Their money would be better spent on upping some other metric like RAM or ssd or battery life, methinks.
