The Sony SmartWatch 2 is a wristwatch with a touchscreen display, Bluetooth and NFC wireless capabilities, and the ability to pair with your smartphone to display notifications, connect to the internet, and provide you with information at a glance while your phone stays in your pocket.

It’s now available for pre-order from the Sony Store for $200.

That’s a lot of money for a piece of wrist wear, but the Sony SmartWatch 2 is about $100 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Gear.

As the name suggests, this is actually Sony’s second swipe at a smart watch. It has a better display, longer battery life, and NFC for pairing with a smartphone. The first model was Bluetooth only.

The SmartWatch 2 has a 1.6 inch, 220 x 176 pixel transflective LCD display which is designed to be readable outdoors. It’s also dust and water resistant.

Sony says you should be able to get up to 3 or 4 days of use under average conditions, and as many as 7 days if you pretty much just use the watch as… well, a watch.

In addition to acting as a sort of remote display for notifications from your phone, you install apps from the Google Play Store. There are custom watch faces, calculators, games, and even a web browser.

Or you could just keep pulling the phone out of your pocket when you need to tell the time, check the weather forecast, or read your latest email messages.

  1. Is this the Dick Tracy era? How about a watch that does not need to pair with anything to get information and make calls.
On another note, the Windows 8.1 release is right around the corner. What happened to all of the tablets that were to follow along? The reviews and news has been dead about them. Instead, we are now concerned with watches.

    1. the omate watch has a sim slot and runs full android 4.2 so it can run as a companion or standalone.

I kickstarted it and it should arrive in NOV.

      1. That is much closer to what I have in mind. However, the menus need to be configured to be more finger-friendly. The vertical versions seem a bit too small for fat fingered users. More margin to separate them and larger text should be a start.
