Budget smartphone company BLU has a habit of offering Android phones with decent specs and low prices. The latest is a phone with a 5.5 inch display called the BLU Studio 5.5. It has a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and a $179 price tag.

BLU’s phones are budget devices. If you pick up a BLU phone you might not get a crazy high-resolution display or a blazing fast processor, but for about the third of the price of the latest Samsung, HTC, or Sony device, you can buy an unlocked phone and use it with the network of your choice.

It’s sort of like buying a phone straight from a Chinese manufacturer such as Zopo, Cubot, Meizu, or Oppo. But unlike those companies, BLU regularly sells its unlocked, unsubsidized phones in the US, which means you can usually buy them from Amazon or other big name retailers.

The BLU Studio 5.5 has a 0.3MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear camera which can shoot 1080p video. it runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has a 2250mAh battery.

While the 4GB of built-in storage is a bit on the low side, the phone does have a microSD card slot which you can use for extra storage. The phone has a MediaTek MTM6589 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with PowerVR SGX544 graphics.

The BLU Studio 5.5 comesi n black, white, blue, pink, or yellow colors.

The phone’s most impressive spec is probably also its least: the large 5.5 inch screen is a TFT display that has a resolution of just 854 x 480 pixels.

  1. It’s perfect for my kids. Big screen, decent specs. And if they break it, it’s cheap to replace and I don’t have to worry about contracts.

  2. I picked up a Blu Life Play and have used it for a month so far. It is not a speed demon but it is fast enough for normal use without delays (speed similar to top end dual core processors). The screen in awesome! The only real down side so far is lack of accessories. It is about the same dimentions as a GS4 so I purchased a belt holster for the GS4 and it fits perfectly. For $200 it is a great phone.
PS. No crapware on the phone either!
