Firefox OS is starting to go global. Last month the first smartphones running Mozilla’s open source operating system launched in parts of Europe. Now you can pick one up in Colombia and Venezula as well.

Brazilians will also have a chance to buy a Firefox OS devices by the end of the year.

Firefox OS phones

Wireless carrier Telefonica started offering two Firefox OS handsets in Spain in July, and now the carrier has announced it’s expanding to Latin America.

The company will offer the same two phones that are already available elsewhere, the Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open.

These are entry-level phones with pretty basic specs, which explains why they’ll sell for around $100 to pre-paid customers, or half of that for customers that sign a 12-month service contract.

Both phones have 1 GHz processors, 3.5 inch, 480 x 320 pixel displays, 256MB of RAM, 512MB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 3.2Mp rear camera.

While Firefox OS can run on higher-end hardware, it’s designed to support low cost devices like these phones, so despite the rather basic specs, the phones should be reasonably responsive.

Mozilla’s mobile operating system is designed to run web apps written with web technologies including HTML5 and JavaScript.

  1. The phones are too expensive especially when the workers are working such long hours for such low pay and since the materials to make cell phones is stolen from the earth and from the people who live where the raw materials are stolen from.
Recycle more, use less, buy less, organize and oppose capitalism

    1. “materials to make cell phones is stolen from the earth”
Gaia wouldn’t mind a few ants moving less then 1% of it’s surface material around. 😀
Really, proportionally to a Sahara sand storm, humanity’s impact on the environment is negligible. The only risk we posses is to ourselves.

We’re really “stealing” from our children since they won’t have easy access to surface materials.

And recycling is a myth. It’s the conversion of energy and unusable material to usable form in an age where energy is more lacking then raw materiel. Say paper, you need heat, water and bleach to process old paper into something usable. The heat is taken from more oil and the bleach is originated from oil. It would have been better to dump the paper, let it decompose naturally or with bacteria over 20 years, while focusing on growing more trees to make more paper.

But like I said, no one really cares. On the one side you have the manics who think they can just produce more and more, and on the other side you have those who are disillusioned to think they can actually make a difference by consuming less and recycling.

The numbers are pretty clear. Nothing we do can make a difference. We’ll run out easily accessible materials and energy sooner or later.

    1. don’t warry, I’m from europe and in my country no sign of them. Btw, you have MotoX…. enjoy it!
