Motorola is taking out a full-page ad in several national newspapers tomorrow teasing its upcoming Moto X Smartphone. The ad doesn’t actually say very much about the phone, but a day ahead of the July 4th holiday, it’s designed to make a play for patriotism, fun, and freedom of choice.

Moto X ad

According to the ad, the Moto X will be designed and manufactured in the United States, and it’s a phone “you can design yourself.”

It’s not clear exactly how much you’ll be able to “design” your phone, but there are a number of ways to interpret that claim. Maybe there’ll be multiple color options. Maybe you’ll even be able to choose the specs you want for your phone, the way you can when buying computers from some vendors.

Or maybe you can personalize the Moto X much the same way you can any other Android phone — by tweaking the user interface with custom wallpapers, widgets, and the like. If that’s all Motorola is promising though, the Moto X would hardly be the “first” of its kind.

You can see the full ad at AdAge. It will run in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and USA Today on July third.

Update: You can sign up to receive more information from Motorola when it’s available.

Update 2: ABC News reports that the customization will primarily involve aesthetics: You can choose from a wide range of colors for the back and sides of the phone (with two-tone color options available), and even upload an image to use as the default wallpaper when your phone ships.

  1. I hope I can pick the software like enable USB mass storage (Microsoft’s MTP is buggy and slow), USB charge only and sleep mode.

  2. I’ll take mine in blue aluminum, with a Snapdragon 800, 3 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, a microSD slot, and a 3D screen. Hopefully we can pick these specs

  3. If I can “design” it with a stereoscopic camera and glasses-free 3D, ala HTC Evo 3D, then I’m on board.

  4. If it’s just case colors and styling then it’s not worth the money to advertise.

  5. Maybe you’ll be able to design and submit a graphic, and they will print that onto the case (or perhaps a skin which ships with the phone). Only way I could think of implementing a completely original design for each customer.

    1. Until they actually explain then it’s all speculation but it would explain why they build the factory in the US if they actually offered custom models of some sort.
